Young Martial Artists Step Up as Coaches at Chu’s Academy

Students at Chu’s Academy of Martial Arts in Gillette are learning that mastering a skill also means being able to teach it to someone else.

During a recent class, second-degree black belt Vedika Ghosh, 16, of Berkeley Heights supervised three red belt students as they coached younger classmates preparing for their next testing.

The student coaches were Giuliana Giammarino, 11, of New Providence; Syon Aggarwal, 14, of Basking Ridge; and Vedant Ghosh, 13, of Berkeley Heights. Together, they helped Trishali Oza, 11, Ishani Oza, 9, and Shiv Oza, 9, all of Watchung, practice their skills.

The session gave students at several levels an opportunity to grow. While the younger students prepared for testing, their coaches practiced explaining techniques and guiding others, with Vedika providing another layer of support and leadership.

Coaching, instruction and mentoring are part of students’ development in Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan at the academy, where sharing knowledge puts their own understanding into practice.

Chu’s Academy has been developing positive attributes in children since 1982. Co-owners Lydia Chu and Michelle Cavett and Program Director Andrew Masini are internationally certified master instructors in the Korean martial art.
